Pursuing environmental justice through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The goal of this project is to catalogue the impacts of environmental racism in St. Louis and provide actionable recommendations for addressing those challenges.

The report draws on expertise from a wide range of stakeholders including scientists, attorneys, neighborhood associations, non-profit organizations, academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and more - all of whom reside in St. Louis and are invested in the City’s success.

  • On August 31, 2019, the Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic at Washington University School of Law published “Environmental Racism in St. Louis.” This first report described environmental racism across several topics using public datasets and stories from community members.

In February 2026, the Clinic released a follow-up report. This report includes new quantitative and qualitative analyses that expand our understanding of the public health impacts that environmental racism imposes upon City residents. The report also includes evidence-based recommendations developed in collaboration with our community partners. These recommendations will be useful to individual residents, community groups, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders working toward environmental justice in St. Louis.

  • Both reports are the result of extensive collaboration between the Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic at Washington University School of Law and a coalition of local civil rights, neighborhood development, and environmental organizations.
